Mamaearth approached Gurugram Police with claims of impersonation after multiple consumers complained about fraud. The complaint was filed by Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd, the parent company of Mamaearth. It said that approximately 471 verified customers were contacted through calls, SMS, Whatsapp, and emails. Customers were asked to purchase Mamaearth products worth Rs 4,999 in order to get cashback and free gifts like televisions, mobile phones, refrigerators, computers, and air conditioners.

Customers were routed to Mamaearth’s website and invited to add products to their cart. They were then instructed to make their payment via UPI or net banking.

According to the complaint, their money would be sent directly to fraud accounts set up for the purpose. The fraudsters forged fake ID’s in the name of the company’s founder and director to gain the trust of the customers. Police have registered an FIR for cheating (Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code) and cheating by using a computer (Section 66-D of Information Technology Act).
