Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir has urged for wellbeing to be given priority over economic growth or GDP. In February 2020, she called for an alternative future based on wellbeing and inclusive growth at an international affairs think tank. She urged the governments to take up green as well as family-friendly targets. Iceland is a member of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll), which works to change the economic system, so it focuses on wellness. The PM heads the ‘Committee on Measurements for Wellbeing’ in the country which has developed 39 wellbeing indicators including economic, environmental and social factors, GDP and other economic indicators among them, but in a new context with social and environmental indicators, to aim for the delicate balance of sustainable development,” she explained.
