Lauder-owned MAC Cosmetics was compelled to close a standalone store in Brighton, UK after a peaceful protest was staged directly outside, according to a report published by local Brighton newspaper, The Argus. The protestors, who were part of activist group Direct Action Everywhere, lay on the pavement and held up placards that read – “It’s not science, it’s violence”, outside the shop in a bid to raise awareness of the cruelty of animal testing. Some shoppers were sympathetic to the message and said that the vegan activists had a right to raise their concerns peacefully. The controversial practice has long been banned for cosmetics sold across the European Union, but continues to be required for cosmetics sold in China.
